Homemade Sourdough French Toast (20-minute recipe!)
Use stale sourdough bread to make this delicious french toast that has a a golden, lacy exterior. Easy to make in 20 minutes with just a few ingredients!
Whisk together milk, egg, vanilla, salt, and cinnamon, until thoroughly combined.
Pour into a shallow baking dish. Put 2 pieces of bread into the dish and press down. Let soak for 2 minutes.
Flip bread and let that side soak for another 2 minutes. (The time is important, it's what allows the bread to have a soft inside with golden outside.) Repeat with next 2 slices.
Meanwhile heat cast iron skillet pan over medium heat for a few minutes. When bread is ready to be cooked, place 1 1/2 tablespoons butter in pan and swirl to coat. Don't skimp on the butter, you need the fat to create the golden brown exterior.
Put 2 slices bread into pan and cook for 4 minutes. Flip, turn heat up to medium, and cook another 3 to 4 minutes, until golden brown. If you'd like it more crisp, slightly turn up heat. Repeat with remaining syrup. Serve warm with maple syrup.
Notes
*If you are using store-bought sourdough and the slices are not this thick, let soak for 1 minutes per side rather than 2.
